How To Prepare Your Car For Winter

With winter approaching, it’s crucial to stay mindful of driving in a vehicle that’s prepared for the harsher winter weather conditions. Having a preventive automobile check before you’re off on your winter escapades is highly recommended by the team at Tom’s Bulldog Automotive. Here’s what we suggest getting inspected and maintained before the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler.

Check your antifreeze

Your antifreeze (the liquid that fills up your radiator) is a crucial part of your automobile’s winter protection. Your vehicle has a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water and it’s important that that ratio is correct. The team at Tom’s Bulldog Automotive has been offering radiator flushes since we opened our doors. We’re happy to assist you with this service before your travels.

Inspect your tires

Be sure that you check the tread depth of your tires before you hit the road during the harsher weather conditions. Tires end up loosing pressure in the cold, so stay on top of their condition. It’s also worth considering switching to winter tires because they have the traction that can handle the snow and ice.

Replace your wipers

Not only do you need functioning wipers to remove snow, they are also necessary to remove the sand, salt, and dirt that could block your vision. Also be sure that the washer container is filled to the top with antifreeze.

Exhaust system

Checking your vehicle’s exhaust system for leaks is definitely something to do before you hit the roads. An exhaust system that is properly sealed greatly lessens the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Heating/cooling system

Radiators and hoses need to be checked for leaks. Drivers need to ensure that their automobile is always running with enough antifreeze made for even the most frigid weather. The front and back defrosters need to both be inspected to make sure that they are functioning optimally.

Having a winter driving kit is also essential to have in your vehicle so you and your family can be prepared for emergencies. Here is what we recommend.

  • Ice scraper
  • First aid kit
  • High protein power bars and water
  • Warning devices such as flares or emergency lights
  • Extra windshield wiper fluid for sub-freezing temperatures
  • Flashlight (and extra batteries)
  • Blanket
  • Properly fitting tire chains
  • "Call Police" signs or other help signs or brightly colored banners
  • Bag of sand or salt (or kitty litter)
  • Snow shovel
  • Extra warm clothes
